Training Alert: FORS Issues New Mandatory Qualifications

FORS has recently announced additional mandatory training requirements for drivers and managers. What do they hope to achieve and, more importantly, what does this mean for haulage companies?

A Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme (FORS) spokesperson said these new requirements would help drivers and managers “keep pace with current trends”. I investigate a little further.

Why is Training Important?

According to the organisation, its huge bank of training courses helps haulage companies embrace a safety mindset, make a positive environmental impact and reduce road risk. Its new mandatory modules make sure participants are up to date with new legislation. The hope is to push the bar for best practice higher and higher.

The latest version is version 5 of the FORS Standard. The document is updated every couple of years to make sure it stays relevant.

What Are the Changes?

The training message for version 5 focuses on some of the key issues the industry is facing today. This includes terror threats and environmental problems, such as air quality in urban centres.

The new requirements affect those at each level of accreditation within haulage companies. Here is a simple breakdown of the additional requirements.

  • Bronze

Current: Safety eLearning module within the past 12 months.

Plus: Professional Security and Counter Terrorism eLearning module within the past 24 months.

  • Silver

Current: Safe Urban Driving, FORS Approved work-related road safety course or Van Smart course within the past five years.

Plus: Professional ‘LoCITY Time to clean up’ eLearning module within the past 24 months.

  • Gold

Gold membership is more comprehensive, so I am just mentioning the extras. Both of these courses must have been completed within the past five years.

Plus: Drivers of Gold Members with truck or van fleets must do a Professional ‘LoCITY Driving’ classroom course. If you have a car or passenger-carrying vehicle fleet your drivers must participate in a FORS Approved environmental awareness training course.

When Do the Requirements Start?

It is great to see the Fleet Operator Recognition Scheme keeping up with changes in both the industry and in the country more generally. Organisations will be assessed using version 5 from 14 January 2019.

There isn’t much time for haulage companies to make these changes but transitional provisions are in place, so don’t panic if you or your fleet aren’t there yet. In the meantime, why not see what the Haulage Exchange platform could do for you?
